Aerial Photography for Archaeology

The advantages of an aerial view of the ground have long been appreciated by archaeologists.
Aerial photography remains one of the most important methods by which new archaeological
sites can be discovered.
- The high viewpoint permits a better appreciation of fine details and their relationships
within the wider site context.
- Potential areas of interest can be detected from features which become more evident when
viewed from the air.
- Crop, frost and soil marks can best be seen from an aerial view point.
But there are significant barriers that prevent many archaeologists benefiting from aerial
photography and it is not as widely used as perhaps it could be. Key issues such as:
- The high cost and inflexibility of manned flights.
- Accessibility and scheduling of flights at short notice.
- Limitations of ‘cameras on poles’.
By investing in the latest unmanned aerial technology, we have overcome these barriers
and are offering the benefits of aerial photography to archaeologists as a flexible,
accessible, cost-effective solution.
